Tuesday 7/9- A few notes on lake meets (for new folks):1) Be there: It is not uncommon for swimmers who train in pools to be uncomfortable swimming in lakes. Unfortunately, if all of our swimmers who felt this way didn’t attend our scheduled lake meets, we wouldn’t have much of a team. We ask that, barring vacations and unavoidable circumstances, everyone attend ALL meets. Swimmers should be aware of their commitment to a team, even if it takes them out of their comfort zone. Remember, to qualify for Championships swimmers must have earned a qualifying time(s) AND have competed in 50% of our scheduled meets. 2) Parents, bring beach chairs, blankets, binoculars, snacks, drinks (no alcohol please), bug spray, suntan lotion, hats, umbrellas, etc. 3) Water quality: The common misconception is that pools are clean and lakes are dirty. This is not necessarily true. A poorly sanitized/maintained pool, regardless of how clear it appears, can harbor very dangerous bacteria/water-born illnesses. Lakes tend to have natural eco-systems that help keep dangerous bacteria in check. The New Jersey State Department of Health requires all public bathing facilities (pools AND beaches) to have microbiological testing done by an independent, state-approved lab on a weekly basis. These results are reported to both the facility and the local board health weekly. 4) Respect beach rules: No glass please. It is common for beaches to close the bathing area because lifeguards are supervising the competing swimmers. If this is the case, swimmers need to respect the host’s policies. Parents, please supervise your kids at all times. 5) ‘Long Course’ vs. ‘Short Course’: Lake meets are 50 METERS (long course) instead of a pools 25 YARDS (short course). As meters are longer than yards, times will appear slower when competing in a lake. An APPROXIMATE way (unofficial) to convert times: to compare a time earned in a lake to a pool time, change the time to all seconds and divide by 1.111. To see what a pool time would be in a lake, change the time to all seconds and multiply by 1.111. You can see Championship Time Standards here. Monday 7/8- It was a hot night on the beach last night as we faced off against Forest Lakes! The meet concluded with some another ‘Cudas win, some good swims, sandcastles, and new summer memories!
